Project Description
Personal Impact Statement
The NTQ development site is situated within Edinburghs’ New Town conservation area on Dundas Street. Plot 1 consists of two adjoining buildings comprising 66 build-to-rent units and 108 affordable housing units. The plot shares multiple complex interfaces including a ramped pedestrian link from Dundas street to King George V Park, an existing residential development and courtyard, and split level street access on either side.
Functioning as the project architect for two adjoining buildings , I managed a team of architects and coordinated the greater design team throughout RIBA stages 1 to 5. The site was both physically and socially complex and required the navigation of commercial, public and institutional interests. This included owners, operators, developers, RACs, council, Historic Scotland and housing associations. I integrated bespoke solutions to the neighbouring development courtyard, Dundas Street frontage and the pedestrian thoroughfare to King George V Park.
Both high level and technical problem solving was necessary to conquer the physical challenges associated with the site and prescriptive design constraints. The outcome was a robust design solution that that satisfied all interested parties while staying true to the original design intent.
